Researchers at UW Medicine have announced a clinical trial seeking to recruit adults recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The trial is testing a drug for its safety and its ability to protect insulin-producing beta cells — the cells in the pancreas that the immune system is attacking.

Why does this matter? Because in the first months after diagnosis, many people with T1D still have some functioning beta cells. The "honeymoon period," as it's sometimes called, is a window where residual insulin production can make management significantly easier. Protecting those cells — even partially, even temporarily — could meaningfully improve quality of life and outcomes.

The "Honeymoon Phase" and Why It Matters

In the early months after a T1D diagnosis, the pancreas often still produces small amounts of insulin. During this honeymoon phase, blood sugar control is typically easier and insulin requirements are lower. But as the immune attack continues, those remaining cells are destroyed.

Preserving even a small amount of natural insulin production has been linked to better blood sugar control, lower risk of hypoglycemia, and fewer long-term complications. This is why researchers are so focused on the window right after diagnosis — it may be when intervention can do the most good.
